What are the Youth Olympiad Games?
It is the only event of it's kind in the Netherlands - partnering 7 European countries -featuring 15 different sports - with over 1.300 competitors - all of whom are under 18 years of age.
The story so far on the Youth Olympiad Games
In 1977 Böblingen (Germany) along with its twin towns of Pontoise (France), Krems (Austria), Alba (Italy), Bergama (Turkey), Glenrothes (Scotland) and Geleen (Netherlands) decided to organize a sporting and cultural event for teenagers from these towns. Since the first event in 1978, hosted by Böblingen, every three years one of the seven towns takes it's turn to host the event. The Youth Olympiad Games was last held in the Netherlands, Geleen in 1987 when nearly 1.000 young people, their coaches and supporting dignitaries from the twin town councils came to Geleen for five days of sport and cultural celebration.
What are the aims of the Youth Olympiad Games?
- To enable our young people to promote friendship and understanding with their European partners;
- To gain confidence;
- To encourage a sense of pride and achievement;
- To achieve good sporting standards.
